Lowertown Commons

(Previously known as: Saint Paul Rubber Company - 300 E. 4th St.)

Built in 1905 for the Saint Paul Rubber Company, it is surprising to find that the architect is unknown.  The building was built in the Classical Revival architectural style and located at 300 East 4th street.  The building was used for many years as a printing press, which housed E. W. Honza Printing Company’s presses and type.  The weight of the presses eventually caused rot and foundation settling and nearly one-fourth of the building was rebuilt in the 1980’s as it was transformed into the Lowertown Commons as the building is know today.  Lowertown Commons is currently a rental apartment community and much of the common space inside is an impressive showcase for post and beam construction.
