Cray Plaza

(Previously known as: Galtier Plaza - 380 Jackson St.)

Galtier Plaza was built in 1985, bolstered by proponents who said it would be the “complete package.” While mixing residential and commercial space was commonplace in the 19th century, the advent of zoning in the 20th century had started separating these uses, defining districts they could occupy but typically not share. Block 40, as it was previously known, was a key link between Lowertown and the business district. Galtier Plaza was a mega-project that promised to change that by creating a self-contained “urban village.” The complex covered a full city block and contained shops, offices, a YMCA, two residential towers (one is condominiums, the other apartments), and an underground parking garage. A couple historic facades were integrated into the Mears Park face, known at the time as “contextualism.” !e mall quickly dried up, and today most of the block-long atrium has been converted to office use. The complex was recently renamed for its largest tenant, a computer company called Cray that moved to downtown St. Paul in 2009.
